Dear Aden:
If it is any consolation to you, I use monofilament almost all the time, even though line manufacturers will give me all the braid I want. Braid is certainly an excellent choice, but when I really learned how to pressure a fish on light tackle at least a half-century ago, the key was applying additional drag at key points in the battle by putting your hands on the line. If I did that with braid, the line would cut my hand down to the bone and it is difficult for me to learn another way of fighting a fish.
Twelve pound test mono is fine and a 30-pound leader should work well. I've caught plenty of snook, reds, and trout on that combination and you can, too.
